Custom Drapery FAQs
Where are your drapes made?
Our drapes and soft treatments are handmade right here in the Midwest and most are made in our own workroom in Indianapolis. This allows better control of lead times and special specifications. And most importantly, it allows us to implement our unique 9-Point Inspection — a process that allows for consistent and accurate production.
Our 9-Point Inspection includes:
1. Double checking fabric yardage and cut lengths upon receiving workorder
2. Inspection of fabric on a light box to ensure there are no snags or imperfections in the fabric
3. Pulled threads to ensure straight cuts with grain of fabric and not pattern placement
4. Proper slide/pleat/snap count to coordinate with custom hardware
5. Precision pattern-matching — every joined panel is ensured to have patterns matched up beautifully
6. Ability to use cotton thread to match fabric color (not available on velvets or patterned fabrics)
7. Holding fabric taut when sewing to avoid rippling or errors
8. Hang drapes for at least 24 hours to ensure accurate drape length
9. Finished product is labeled with client name, room location, and number of pleats to set installation up for success
What lengths do your drapery panels come in?
While off-the-rack drapes come in just a few standard sizes, everything we make is completely custom which means we can accommodate nearly any size window. From two-story drapes to cafe curtains, we can make whatever length and width you need.
What is your 9-Point Inspection?

Can I add custom drapes over blinds or shades?
Yes! Drapes can be added to windows with blinds, shades, or shutters for a layered look that adds both style and functionality.
Can I add drapes to two story windows?
Yes! This is one of our specialties. We love adding draperies to tall, two-story windows. Our seamless designs add drama to a room as well as light control and privacy.
Can I add trim to my drapes?
Absolutely! We have a curated collection of the finest trims that can be added to your drapery panels for a completely unique look. Your designer can help you choose a trim that will look fabulous with your selected fabric.
Can draperies be motorized?
Yes! We can motorize your drapes and even sync them with your home automation system if you have one. Our motorized drapes can be operated by a remote control, mobile device, or voice command through a home automation system.
Do you make blackout drapes?
Yes. All of our draperies are fully lined. We have linings that offer different opacities, from light-filtering to room-darkening.
Our room-darkening drapes use an Italian blackout lining and specialty construction methods conceal pinholes that can leak light. Our blackout liners are available in a variety of colors, not just black, to ensure your windows look beautiful from the street.
For a truly dark room, we'd recommend layering room-darkening drapes over another room-darkening product, like the Duette® LightLock™ system. Your designer can help you choose the right combination of products to achieve your blackout needs.
Can I add draperies to my doors?
Yes, draperies can be applied to certain types of doors. They are a smart solution for sliding glass doors, for example. Your designer can help you determine if draperies or another product would be the best fit for your particular door.
How long should my drapes be?
That depends on your space and the look you are trying to achieve. You might prefer a hoover, puddle, or break. Your designer will help you decide what length will accomplish your desired look.
Can I add patterned drapes to a room that has patterned furniture or decor?
Yes, it's all in the fabric selection. Your Drapery Street designer will help you choose a drapery fabric that doesn't compete with, but rather complements, the other patterns already in the room.
Can I see your fabrics online?
We have so many fabrics that the best way to view them is by visiting one of our showrooms. Do you have a specific fabric in mind? Ask us if we can source it for you — we likely can!
We have showrooms in Fishers, Indiana and Carmel, Indiana. Walk-ins are welcome for browsing but appointments are required for a design consultation.
How do I measure for my drapes?
There's no need to worry about taking precise measurements because our full-service team takes care of everything from design to installation, including professional measurements. For your first appointment, it's helpful to bring rough measurements and photos of your windows to the showroom.
