New Construction FAQs
What is your Pre-Build Center?
Our Pre-Build Center, located within our Fishers Showroom, is a dedicated space for those undergoing the homebuilding or renovation process. Many customers do not realize the options that are only available to them before their build is complete — such as hardwired blinds and pockets for fully recessed shades or hidden drapery tracks.
The Pre-Build Center includes a side-by-side display comparing what it looks like when a homeowner consults with us before building versus after so clients can clearly understand what their options are at different stages in the build process.
We invite customers to bring their builders, architects, or interior designers with them to the Pre-Build Center, or our design experts can walk homeowners through the process and collaborate with their builder on-site later.
When should I start planning for window treatments for my new home?
As soon as possible. Beginning the process while you're still in the blueprint phase is going to give you the most options.
Recessing treatments allows your shades to virtually disappear when they aren’t needed, achieving a clean, streamlined look. In order to recess shades you’ll need to schedule a window treatment consultation while your build is still in the blueprint phase. This allows your designer to work with your architect or builder to ensure the pocket sizes can accommodate recessed treatments.
If you want automated window treatments we recommend a prewiring consult before outlets go in and drywall goes up. You only get one opportunity to pre-wire so you don't want to miss it. You can add battery-operated treatments once your build is complete, but hardwired treatments allow for a low-profile installation as no battery packs are required. And you’ll never have to worry about changing batteries!
If you have begun the build process or have already moved in, we can still design and install beautiful window treatments that will match the integrity of your new home.
What are the common pitfalls to avoid when selecting window treatments for a new home?
When pre-wiring or designing treatments for a new build home, it’s important to work with an experienced window treatment professional to avoid common mistakes like:
-Putting wires & power in the wrong places
-Not coordinating the headbox with the window trim
-Taking a “one-size-fits-all” approach & using the same type of treatment, like roller shades, in every room
-Putting blackout shades where they aren’t needed, like bathrooms & closets
-Not taking into account the streetside view of the home— traditional all-white roller shades can ruin the aesthetic of a home’s exterior!
What are the benefits of working with Drapery Street on my new home?
Drapery Street specializes in new build projects. We can motorize any type of window treatment including drapes, shades, shutters, and blinds. By working alongside your construction team, Drapery Street will ensure all of your treatments are flawless by move-in day. We focus on the details such as:
-Correct pocket sizes for recessed treatments
-Wiring & outlets in the appropriate spots to completely hide electrical power
-Wire spaces with proper voltage to accommodate window treatment specifications
-Location of wall switches to operate motorized shades
-Integration with your home automation system of choice
-Selecting the best treatment for every window & door, taking into account the functionality required (room darkening, light filtering, privacy, UV protection) & the aesthetic of the room
-The exterior/streetside view of your home
Blinds, shades, shutters, drapes... which type of window treatment is right for my new home?
There's a lot to consider when it comes to selecting the right window treatment for each space of your home. Many people find the process overwhelming once they begin. That's why we're here to help!
Our designers have extensive training and years of experience designing window treatments. We know all of the factors to consider, so you don't have to. We will guide you through the process, asking questions along the way, helping you choose the products you'll be happiest with.
You don't have to know which product you want before getting started with Drapery Street. In fact, we'd encourage you to start with an open mind because sometimes what you think you want isn't what will look or function best in the space, which causes costly mistakes. Your Drapery Street designer will ensure you avoid expensive mistakes and that you love your finished look.
Should I use the same type of treatment throughout my house?
No. We typically advise against this. Each room in your home has a unique function and your window treatments should match. You may need blackout treatments in your bedroom but probably don't need them in your laundry room. At your consultation, we will discuss the needs of each space in your new house so we can find the appropriate window treatments to match.
Which of your products can be motorized/automated?
Unlike many home automation companies, nearly all of the window treatments we offer can be automated including shades, drapes, blinds, and shutters. We offer the only motorized interior shutters with concealed batteries currently on the market. We also offer motorized outdoor roller shades.
I have custom-size or specialty-shaped windows in my new home. Can you help?
Yes! It's our specialty! All of our window treatments are custom made and we have solutions for any size or shape window. That includes large windows, corner windows, bay windows, arch windows, circle windows, angled windows, skylights, doors, transoms, and sidelites. No window is too large or too difficult for us to cover.
Are your window treatments safe for children and pets?
All of our window treatments are designed with safety in mind—a responsibility Drapery Street and Hunter Douglas take very seriously. From cordless and motorized operating systems, retractable lift cords, cord tensioners and wand controls, we offer a wide array of operating system options for enhanced child and pet safety.
Can I improve my new home's energy efficiency with window treatments?
Yes. Without energy-efficient window treatments, as much as 50% of a home’s heating and cooling energy can be lost through its windows. All Hunter Douglas window treatments provide window insulation, offering your home increased protection against heat loss during the winter, as well as minimizing the sun’s heat or “solar heat” during the summer.
Hunter Douglas is the industry leader in making a big energy savings difference at the window. In 1985, Hunter Douglas invented the highly energy-efficient Duette® honeycomb shades in response to the energy crisis of the late 1970s. More recently, they’ve introduced Duette Architella® honeycomb shades, which offer superior energy efficiency thanks to their patented honeycomb-within-a-honeycomb construction, and Vignette® Tiered Architella Shades, featuring rear fabric air pockets that trap air and create an extra layer of insulation.
Your designer will help you choose an energy-efficient treatment that will meet your other needs too, like privacy and light control.
