With young children and busy careers, David and Dawn value a great night’s sleep. But light shining in through their bedroom window was preventing them from getting the quality sleep they desired. They also believed their twin toddlers would nap better if they could create a darker atmosphere for them. They came to Drapery Street looking for blackout solutions for their primary bedroom and children’s room.
David and Dawn’s complimentary design consultation began with a tour of the Drapery Street showroom. Caryn O’Sullivan, a window treatment designer and owner of Drapery Street, gave them a quick overview of each Hunter Douglas product and helped them narrow in on the products that would accomplish their blackout goals. Dawn and David were able to view full-size products and experience in-person how each one functioned.
For their primary bedroom, David and Dawn decided on a combination of window treatments to give them the greatest light control. Shutters were installed in the bottom section of their window. A blackout-lined, soft cornice captures light at the top of the window and also conceals a motorized room-darkening roller shade. The roller shade extends all the way to the floor and 5” past the window to minimize light leaks. Decorative drapes with blackout lining capture any remaining light leaking in from the sides of the shade.
This combination of window coverings provides David and Dawn the blackout conditions they desired and also gives them the ability to allow natural light into their bedroom whenever they wish. When the roller shade is tucked away under the cornice and the shutters or shutter slats are open, beautiful light streams into the room. They are totally in control of the amount of natural light in their master bedroom.
For their daughters’ room, David and Dawn chose blackout Hunter Douglas Duette® honeycomb shades with a LiteRise® operating system. LiteRise® allows them to raise and lower the shades without cords, imperative for child safety. The shades hold securely in any position — there’s no need for constant adjusting. The shades were mounted floor to ceiling to block light when lowered. Blackout drapes were again used to capture any light seeping in from the side of the shades. Now two and half years of age, their daughters are still taking two hours naps! David and Dawn credit the restful atmosphere created by their window treatments for this parenting miracle.
What David & Dawn say about working with Drapery Street
“Working with Caryn and Drapery Street has been exceptional. Caryn has a brilliant eye for design and an easy chic style. She found just what we wanted – even when we weren’t sure ourselves what that was. A lot of things claim to be able to change your life, but the blackout shades we got from Drapery Street really, truly, did. Our bedroom has a huge window that lets in every beam of afternoon sun. But at the touch of a button (or, even cooler, the remote) it is transformed into a dark, sleep-ready space. Having twin toddlers, it is essential to be able to change a room from a bright playplace to a dark nap space. The blackout shades from Drapery Street do just that. I’ll never forget the name Drapery Street because I am constantly asked the the question: ‘Where did you get those beautiful window treatments?’“
The Jones’ family is getting plenty of great sleep these days. And because Drapery Street is a Hunter Douglas Centurion Gallery, David and Dawn can rest even easier knowing their window treatments are backed by the Hunter Douglas Lifetime Guarantee, Limited Lifetime Warranty, and Right Choice Promise™.
