How do you know when it’s time for a window treatment overhaul? One sure way of knowing is if you look around your home and see these…
We get it. Vertical blinds are functional and sometimes they can seem like the best solution for tricky spaces like sliding glass doors or expansive windows. But they are outdated, clunky, and make a space feel more corporate than home-y. There are many alternatives to vertical blinds that are functional and have a refined style. Don’t choose function over form when you can have both! Choose one of these alternatives and bring your house out of the 1980s!
4 alternatives to dreaded vertical blinds:
1. Custom Draperies
The most common place we see vertical blinds are on sliding glass doors. Many people worry that draperies will get caught in their sliders so they opt for vertical blinds instead. It’s true that this can be an issue, but if you work with a window treatment expert they’ll help you design and install drapes that won’t get caught in the door.
Drapes will add height and softness to your room that simply cannot be achieved with vertical blinds. See more examples of draperies for sliding glass doors here.
2. Sheers
Many people choose vertical blinds because they have a wide width window and need an affordable solution to cover it. If this is the case for you, consider sheer window treatments. Sheers are wonderful because they let in natural light while still providing privacy. Open-weave sheers offer even more privacy coverage and are a smart choice for bedrooms or rooms facing the street. Lined and natural woven sheers take this classic look to the next level.
3. Hunter Douglas Luminette® Privacy Sheers
Hunter Douglas Luminette® Privacy Sheers are a great options for sliding glass doors, wide windows, and expansive walls of windows. If you like the vertical lines created by vertical blinds, you’ll love Luminettes! They consist of vertical fabric vanes that can be rotated 180-degrees to diffuse light, filter out glare, reduce UV rays, and provide privacy coverage. Choose from one of several color options.
Luminette window coverings come with the exclusive SofTrak™ hardware system. When you slide your Luminettes closed, the hardware system conceals the headrail with fabric for an elegant look. They are also compatible with one of our favorite Hunter Douglas technologies, PowerView™ motorization.
4. Shades
Shades are a great alternative to vertical blinds and are especially practical for double doors. Shades can be pulled down at night for privacy or to block harsh sun in the morning or afternoon. Shades come in a many varieties but we especially love Hunter Douglas Vignette® Modern Roman Shades. Select from several fold styles, colors, and either horizontal or vertical orientation. There are no exposed rear cords which keeps your doors uncluttered.
Other great shades to consider are roller shades, Hunter Douglas Silhouette® Window Shadings, and Hunter Douglas Honeycomb Shades.
